This was the most prominent victim of the “Harrison curse.” The Warriors were 14-0 and ranked No. 2 when Calbert Cheaney, who remains the Big Ten’s career scoring leader and played 13 years in the NBA, broke his foot against No. 1 Terre Haute North. Carl Heldt contracted mono. Harrison was so deep that future NFL Pro Bowl linebacker Kevin Hardy was seventh man.
It wasn’t until 1992 that Harrison finally won a sectional championship, with Will Wyman on the sidelines and Walter McCarty underneath the basket.
