1982 Bosse
vs.
1989 Harrison

No. 1 1982 BOSSE, coach Joe Mullan Led by the dynamic duo of Derrick Dowell and Myron Christian, Bosse was ranked No. 1 and undefeated when it lost on a last-second running one-hander by Gary Roosevelt’s Renaldo Thomas, 58-57, in the state semifinals. Dowell was an all-PAC-10 player at USC and drafted in the second round by the Washington Bullets. But a torn Achilles tendon kept him from realizing his NBA dreams. Christian played collegiately at Indiana State and Kentucky Wesleyan. Evie Waddell played for Duquesne. Fast forward years later: Thomas coached Roosevelt and future Michigan State star Branden Dawson in the 2010 3A title game, a 65-62 overtime loss to Cody Zeller and Washington.

This was the most prominent victim of the “Harrison curse.” The Warriors were 14-0 and ranked No. 2 when Calbert Cheaney, who remains the Big Ten’s career scoring leader and played 13 years in the NBA, broke his foot against No. 1 Terre Haute North. Carl Heldt contracted mono. Harrison was so deep that future NFL Pro Bowl linebacker Kevin Hardy was seventh man. It wasn’t until 1992 that Harrison finally won a sectional championship, with Will Wyman on the sidelines and Walter McCarty underneath the basket.
