1967 North
vs.
2003 Harrison

North had never even won a sectional title until Bob Ford led the Huskies on their magical postseason run. Ford set a new four-game state tournament record with 128 points, eclipsing Oscar Robertson’s previous mark. Ford, who scored 27 in the title game, a 60-58 victory over Lafayette Jeff, entered his senior year of 1968 among the top prep players in the nation. He still is the City’s No. 3 all-time leading scorer with 1,815 points. He starred for Purdue and played for the Memphis Tams of the old American Basketball Association. What is amazing is that Harrison, led by Vaughn Wedeking and Greg Nelson, who were mainstays on Jacksonville’s 1970 NCAA runners-up, Bosse, led by future Purdue standout Larry Weatherford, and Reitz were all ranked in the state’s top 10 in 1967, not the Huskies. It might have been the City’s best year, ever, at least in terms of depth in the upper division. North is still the lone City team of the modern era to win a single-class state championship. No City team has ever won a 3A or 4A state title since the IHSAA went to a four-class format in 1997-98.
